At an era when the dating pool is vast and diverse, what can make a singleton be singled out from the rest and land a date more easily? This is exactly what language-learning app Duolingo wanted to find out when it surveyed over 700 people. The findings might surprise you.

You Are More Likely To Land  A Date If You Can Do This

According to the survey, the vast majority of Americans, a staggering 72 per cent, consider people who speak multiple languages more attractive than those who only speak their mother tongue.

If you are an American who speaks more than one language, you are at a great advantage, since a mere 25 per cent of Americans speak a language other than English, according to a 2013 YouGov survey. In comparison, more than half of EU citizens speak more than one language, with 38 per cent of them speaking English.

Foreign Languages, Intelligence, And Social Status

Another interesting finding of the latest survey is that foreign languages are also considered to be a sign of higher social status. In fact, 76 per cent of Americans described people who speak more than one language as “worldly.” New York-based dating coach, Meredith Golden, explains: “High intellect is very attractive. Speaking more than one language fluently suggests that someone is very bright or well educated. All the single women I work with list intelligence as a desired trait in a potential mate.”

Dating A Foreign Person

Want to land a date with a foreigner? The survey looked into this matter too and came to the conclusion that Americans are quite adventurous when it comes to dating. 76 percent of them claimed to be welcoming of a summer affair abroad, and 72 per cent even went as far as to say they’d gladly relocate overseas for the right partner.

The study also found that people don’t mind if their partner doesn’t even speak the same language as them. In fact, 64 per cent of all Americans would be willing to go out with someone who doesn’t speak their language – with men even more ready to do so, as 71 per cent of them claimed they’d be happy to do it.

So, if you are one of those people who love a lady with an accent, you’re in good company. And if your mother made you take language lessons as a kid, we bet you’re more than grateful. She’s definitely raised your chances to land a date.
