Is There Such A Thing As A Divorce Gene?

Divorce is not a topic that many are thrilled to discuss. It brings up feelings of melancholia and pain to those who have gone through it. Many of us think that it may be caused by unfortunate circumstances. New research seems to point out otherwise. Could genetics and something labeled divorce gene play a role in all of this?

The Truth About The Existence Of The Divorce Gene

The research was head by Jessica Salvatore. She collaborated with Virginia Commonwealth University in the US and Lund University in Sweden.

In her study, she observed the divorce patterns of people who were adopted. She also examined the divorce patterns of the biological as well as the adoptive parents of these individuals.

The observation she shared was not a surprise at all. There isn’t a specific divorce gene in our bodies. Rather, it is what she called “a family measure of genetic risk.” The negative traits are parents had could be passed on to us through our genes.

Traits like being impulsive, poor decision making, the lack of self-control are factors that could ruin any relationship. Unfortunately, these are traits we got from our mother and father.

What This Means For Children Of Divorce

This isn’t good news to hear for children who have divorced parents. However, knowing that you may have inherited bad genes isn’t all bad. Most of the bad traits that we got from our parents are things that we can work on.

For example, if we know that we are impulsive, we can correct it by learning how to slow down and think things through. Yes, it’s going to take time for us to correct all of our negative characteristics. But, we need to keep in mind that it is not impossible to do.

Focus On Self-Improvement

In this situation, the best thing to do is to focus on self-improvement. There may not be a specific divorce gene, but it cannot be denied that one of our goals in life should be to improve ourselves for the better. Do share this if you found it helpful.
