How many couples in your circle break up and then get back together again? It’s an ironic situation, isn’t it? According to some statistics, 50% of couples who break up get back together again. This means that a lot of people still can’t get over an ex from years ago.
You Can’t Get Over An Ex Because Of Uncertainty
Researchers from the University of Utah and the University of Toronto conducted an experiment where they questioned people about the reasons why they would want to stay or get out of the relationship. The most popular reasons why people would want to stay are as follows:
- Optimism; hoping that the other person will change
- Emotional investment
- Family duties
- Fear of the uncertainty that goes after a breakup.
66% of the correspondents also said that they would want to stay in the relationship because of the dependence they have developed. On the other hand, the top reasons why people would want to leave are:
- Emotional distance
- Lack of trust
Despite these reasons, most respondents are still hesitant to go out the front door because the fear of uncertainty lingers through their heads. This is probably why most of us can’t get over our exs, still. We factor in what could have been, we wonder if the person has changed his or her ways, and, to be totally honest, we were not even sure about the breakup in the first place. Well, at least that’s what Science says.
So What Do You Do When You Cannot Get Over An Ex?
The most important thing that you need to do is to reassess your reason. Why would you want to get back to your ex? Is it because your lonely? Is it because you fear being single? If your answer is yes, then it’s not going to help you make the rekindled relationship better.
Based on another research, most people who get back with their exs expect that the person has changed for the better. That doesn’t happen all the time so that’s why it’s important to really see the why behind your decision.
