Do Long-Distance Relationships Really Work?

It’s hard to justify that a relationship which began through online dating can go the distance, figuratively speaking. The same applies when a couple is miles apart, and only see each other three times a year. A lot of people don’t really believe that long-distance relationships (LDRs) can work because 1. not a lot of people they know are in long-distance relationships, and 2. they have a friend of a friend whose LDR did not last longer than a few months.

How to Make a Long-Distance Relationship Work & Last

A long-distance relationship is different because there’s that lack of physical presence. It’s the unconventional type of relationship, but it doesn’t mean that it is less real or that it cannot pass the relationship test of time. You just have to make it work by following the tips on this list:

1. Avoid Communicating Excessively

This is a surprising tip, don’t you think? A lot of LDR couples make the mistake of communicating too often. You do not want to be possessive and be online for 12-hours a day just to talk to the person you love. There’s nothing wrong with that, of course, but space for a couple to be themselves is an essential proponent of healthy relationships.

2. Long Distance Relationship Rules

When you’re not talking to a person face to face, it’s easy to misunderstand or misinterpret conversations. It’s also possible that you can do things that can surprise your partner. To make things clearer, you have to set long-distance relationship rules that can manage your expectations.

3. Visits are Important

As much as you can, you have to see each other. It would be nice if you can see each other more than three times a year. There’s no substitute for physical presence despite how well you’re communicating online.

4. Get Creative with Online Dates

Don’t get stuck in the rut of going online and just saying how your day went. It can work during the start of the relationship, but it will get old quickly. The more creative you with your online dates, the better so you can sprinkle a bit of flavor on to your love life.

5. Personal Gifts are Great Ideas

Instead of spending money on expensive gifts, the better idea would be to give something that you already own or that you made for the other person to cherish. When you’re apart, this gift will be the only tangible object your partner’s going to have from you.
